Haven't posted in about a week. First, I got the flu...ugh! Then, attended the "Women in Corrections" conference for 4 days. Great conference, and I enjoyed seeing people I have worked with. I now work 6 days a week, and put 100+ miles round trip on my car/day. It makes for a very tiring week. But...I LOVE my new job! We have some of the most severely mentally ill kids I've ever worked with. One kid is PDD, and staff at times, have trouble understanding him. He is frequently lying on the floor, I think trying to get the feeling of weight on himself. I am trying to educate the staff abt the PDD Spectrum DOs...as much as I know, which I admit is not enough! We have considered getting a weighted vest for him, but he is a big boy and lashes out, so there is concern he might use it as a weapon. Placement has also been hard for him, as there are few group homes geared to Autistic youth. Poor kid! I will contact one of the local Autism centers for more information. Also, I would like for them to train our staff. Not much else here. It is getting cooler, thank goodness!
